Alyssa had to swallow past a sudden lump as she thought about the seven-year-old boy wearing superhero clothes and offering her his magnifying glass who was far too young to lose his mother, mentally or physically. She fired off her response.

Thanks for the update. You may as well take off since there’s nothing you can do but wait. I’ll swing by the hospital when I finish up here.

She put her phone away and broke the news to Tessa. Together, they went inside to tell Brandon his mom was out of surgery but was still not awake. Then Alyssa hunkered down so she could look into the eyes of this little guy who’d managed to worm his way into the center of her heart. ‘Does that offer to borrow your magnifying glass still stand? I have a feeling it’s going to help my team catch the bad guy.’ She couldn’t explain the compulsion to ask, but when he raced to the kitchen and returned with the magnifying glass in hand, proudly presenting it to her, she knew she’d done the right thing.

Afterwards, she thanked Tessa for her time and said bye to the boys, appreciating how she’d been more unnerved at the idea of facing two seven-year-old superhero-clad youngsters than she was at the prospect of staring down an armed suspect.

On the way back to the hospital, she called Brock to let him know she’d be later than expected.
